Streaming Safety Tips
for Young Streamers

Streaming is awesome โ€” but staying safe online is the most important part. Read this before you go live.

When you stream, you're broadcasting yourself to potentially thousands of people on the internet. Most of them are cool โ€” but it's important to know what to share, what to keep private, and how to handle any bad situations that come up.

The Golden Rules of Streaming Safety

๐Ÿ‘ช

Always Tell a Parent or Guardian

Before you start streaming, make sure a parent or trusted adult knows. They can help you set up safe settings, monitor your chat, and be there if something goes wrong. This isn't optional โ€” it's important.

๐ŸŽญ

Use a Streamer Name, Not Your Real Name

Pick a fun username for your streaming identity. Don't use your real first and last name. Something like "StarGamerXL" or "PixelPanda" keeps you anonymous and sounds cool anyway.

๐Ÿ“

Never Share Your Location

Don't mention your city, school, neighborhood, or any place that could help someone figure out where you live. Even saying "I'm from Chicago" is more info than you need to share.

๐Ÿ“ท

Be Careful With Your Camera

If you use a webcam, make sure nothing in the background reveals personal information โ€” no mail, school badges, or photos with identifiable information. Keep your background clean or use a virtual background.

๐Ÿ”’

Enable Chat Moderation

Both Twitch and YouTube have automatic moderation tools โ€” turn them on! On Twitch, enable AutoMod and add banned word lists. On YouTube, turn on "Held for review" for comments from new accounts.

How to Handle Trolls & Mean Comments

Unfortunately, some people on the internet are mean for no reason. Here's how to deal with it:

๐Ÿ”‡

Timeout or Ban Immediately

You don't have to read mean comments or respond to them. Both Twitch and YouTube let you instantly ban or time out viewers. Use these tools freely โ€” your stream is your space and you get to set the rules.

๐Ÿ™…

Don't Engage With Trolls

Trolls want a reaction. The moment you respond โ€” even to argue back โ€” you give them what they want. The best move is to ban and move on without saying a word about it.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Tell a Trusted Adult

If someone says something that genuinely scares you or feels threatening, tell a parent or trusted adult right away. Save screenshots as evidence. Never try to handle serious situations alone.

๐Ÿ’ก Remember This

Most people watching your stream are there because they enjoy it. Don't let one mean person ruin the experience for you and all your real supporters. Ban, move on, and keep having fun.
